Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers. According to the World Health Organization, over three million people are diagnosed with skin cancer every year. Fortunately, at Dermatology Associates, we are proud to offer safe and effective skin cancer treatment.
At Dermatology Associates, we take the time to review your health and medical history in detail before recommending or prescribing skin cancer treatment. We understand that no two cases of skin cancer are exactly alike; as such, treatment for skin cancer is not one-size-fits-all. We create customized treatment plans for each patient in order to ensure the best results. Often times, Mohs surgery is necessary and is offered at Dermatology Associates.
Mohs surgery is a decades-old technique that is still the gold standard for treating the two most common types of skin cancers, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, when they are on very sensitive areas such as the face, ears, nose, scalp, neck, hands and feet, or when they are relatively large in size, i.e., 1-2 cm or larger. It is a thorough and detailed procedure in which the surgeon removes the carcinoma along with a small margin of healthy tissue and promptly analyzes it while the patient waits. If they find cancer cells in the margin, they go back to the patient and remove another layer of skin and analyze it. They keep repeating the process until they get tissue samples that don’t have any cancer cells at the margins. This allows the surgeon to remove the skin cancer while minimizing the removal of normal healthy tissue.
Mohs surgery has an impressive cure rate of over 98 percent for both basal cell carcinomas and squamous cells carcinomas. In recent years, it has also been used to treat early-stage melanomas. Of course, not everyone is a good candidate for Mohs surgery. During a consultation with one of our medical professionals, you can learn more about the procedure and whether or not it is necessary in your case.
